Rehoming St Mary’s Music School?
As many of you will know, there is a possibility that St Mary’s Music School could be moving buildings in upcoming years. There are plans for the music school to move to the Royal High School on Carlton Hill, Edinburgh.
The Royal High School could provide enough space for up to 120 pupils and would be fitted with a “flexible performance space” in the main hall, for up 250 people. The Eastern block would be demolished to create space for new classroom blocks and practice rooms for pupils and staff. Architect Richard Murphy has been appointed to draw up designs and videos have been uploaded to youtube to promote these ideas.
This move is very exiting as it would open up lots of opportunities for young musicians to perform and work within a building bigger and better than the building St Mary’s is currently using.
This is all good, but there are also plans to turn the Royal High School into a 75m, five-star hotel, to be run by Rosewood Hotels and Resorts, based in Texas.
Music school bosses and conservation groups have been arguing that turning the historic Royal High School into a five-star luxury hotel would damage the city’s World Heritage status.
